Project description:

Challenge: The company developed the idea of a plastic-free cup as a response to the global shift toward sustainable packaging. Recognizing growing legal and consumer pressure to reduce plastic use, the company aimed to create packaging that is eco‑friendly, functional, and ready for mass production. After analyzing the European market and testing dozens of barrier coatings, it designed recyclable paper packaging that matches polyethylene in performance without using traditional polymers.

Solution: The company developed UniCup™ through collaboration between its R&D teams, production units, and external partners. Over 200 tests and numerous material and coating experiments resulted in a stable, scalable solution. UniCup™, the first Ukrainian paper cup with a water-dispersion barrier free of traditional polymers, is produced on a dedicated line with full process control. To implement it, Univest carried out modernization in three areas: heat recovery (reducing electricity consumption from 450 to 290 kWh); self-generation (three solar stations up to 0.8 MW, 22% of energy in summer); energy storage (planned 4 MW for autonomous operation and cost reduction).

Result: In response to tightening EU environmental standards, the company offers packaging solutions that already meet future requirements: a closed-loop production cycle, certified plastic-free materials, and eco-focused private label technologies. The company has become a trusted partner for retailers, fuel networks, HoReCa, and distributors in Ukraine and Europe. In 2025, Univest plans to export to 18 countries and has received inquiries from the UK, France, and Switzerland. UniCup™ is not a reaction to a trend, but rather a vision of the future of sustainable packaging.
