Two Friends Under The Sun: Sheep and The Solar Farm

Two Friends Under The Sun: Sheep and The Solar Farm

Project description:
Kalyon Enerji invested in one of the largest Solar Power Plants (SPP) around the World, in Karapinar, Turkiye and the SPP covers approximately 19.2 million m2 of salt steppe. Especially during the spring season a huge amount of vegetation is growing out of the soil under solar panels and this vegetation needs to be removed to prevent the panels from the risk of damage or wildfire. By this project, the vegetation that needs to be removed is turning into a sustainable grazing opportunity for sheep herders to increase community welfare.
The SPP positively impacted the environment by reducing grazing pressure and improving biodiversity. It also benefited sheep herders economically by providing sustainable grazing opportunities. The pilot grazing project directly benefited 3 households whose main economic activity is sheep-herding in the vicinity of the facility.
The first grazing trial inside the Karapinar SPP field started with a flock of approximately 70 sheep from the neighboring village, and on the 3rd day of the trial, grazing expanded to a flock of 600 sheep. The pilot projects were continued successfully with the grazing of 600 sheep on a daily basis. The measured outcomes such as successful grazing implementation and community benefits indicate positive impacts of the project. The grazing project implementation covers 335.6 hectares of the Karapinar SPP as the pilot project site.
