Partnership in the times of the COVID-19 pandemic

Challenge:
METRO Ukraine understands that high-quality and safe products are now very essential for doctors, patients and elderly people. Following the recommendation of the National Health Service, in March, the company provided humanitarian aid in the form of food and non-food items to hospitals in major cities of Ukraine. In April METRO donated 5000 Easter packages to elderly people; in the end of April METRO together with its professional clients conducted a social campaign of providing hot meals to doctors treating patients with COVID-19; In May METRO implemented the project on the responsible and ecological utilization of used masks and gloves.
Solution:
In March METRO Ukraine provided the humanitarian aid in the form of food and non-food items to hospitals treating infected patients in major cities of Ukraine. The East Europe Foundation became a partner in the implementation of this project together with Kyiv City Food Bank Charitable Foundation.
In April METRO donated 5000 Easter social packages to the elderly people in 18 METRO cities. Social kits included goods of first need – oil, sugar, pasta, buckwheat and corn cereals, canned vegetables and soap.
In the end of April the company has responded to the Ministry of Health call to join the nationwide campaign #SupportingDoctors by joining its forces with partners in the campaign of providing hot meals to doctors combat coronavirus infection. METRO provides partners with free of charge, high-quality and useful products for complex hot meals, and restaurants prepare and deliver 440 meals daily to the medical institutions.
Within the framework of its Sustainability strategy, we implemented the project on the responsible and ecological utilization of used masks and gloves. In May in four METRO Stores in Kyiv was installed the specialized boxes for used personal means of protection for customers, employees and all responsible Kyiv citizens.
Results:
At a time when responsible business needs to join forces to defeat an invisible enemy together, METRO chose the way to help the society with food donations, while the company has wide experience in supporting people in need by providing them with humanitarian aid.
METRO Ukraine has provided humanitarian aid in the form of food and non-food items to medical institutions treating patients with coronavirus infection: about 16 tons of buckwheat, sugar, flour, other social goods, 13.5 thousand units of meat, vegetables and fish canned goods, detergents and personal hygiene products for staff and patients of hospitals.
We donated 5000 Easter social packages to the elderly people in 18 METRO cities. Social kits included goods of first need.
As of end of April till now METRO on a regular basis donated food to prepare hot meals for doctors in five cities – Dnipro, Lviv, Kyiv, Odessa and Kharkiv. In total – 440 meals per day.
In four METRO stores in Kyiv are located specialized boxes for collection and safe utilization of used personal means of protection. About 100 specialized boxes filled with used masks and gloves, the total weight of which is approximately 100 kg, are sent for burning every month.
