Improving Access to Justice for Veterans of the Russia–Ukraine War and Their Families

Challenge: During the full-scale war, military personnel and their families face numerous legal challenges, namely access to benefits and compensation, obtaining combatant status, disciplinary and criminal proceedings, inheritance and guardianship issues. The state system of free legal aid is overloaded, while many cases fall into a grey area between military and civil law, requiring specialised expertise.
Solution: In 2025, INTEGRITES took its pro bono activities to a new level by announcing the launch of a separate division – the Military Law practice, which has been providing free legal advice to military personnel and their families since 2022. The team advises on a range of legal issues, represents military personnel and their families in courts and before state authorities, and assists responsible businesses that support their employees and communities by advising mobilised personnel and their families.
Result: Since 2022, INTEGRITES has devoted more than 1,200 hours annually to pro bono service to military personnel, accumulating experience in more than 150 cases. Led by Oleksandr Onishchenko, the team secured payments and compensation owed to clients by the state, totalling approximately UAH 90 million. In 2025, INTEGRITES sponsored the publication of “Matter of Honour” – a guide for Ukrainian National Guard servicemen on the application of international humanitarian law – and became signatory to the Veteran-Friendly Business Principles.
