Improvement of the trench candle production systems for the Armed Forces of Ukraine

Improvement of the trench candle production systems for the Armed Forces of Ukraine

Project description:

Following the beginning of the full-scale invasion,  Dnipro Lyceum created many charitable initiatives. One of them was the production of trench candles together with the Fund TAPS Coordination Headquarters of Dnipro Volunteers.

Their SEPIA project, created to follow and promote Sustainable Development Goals, became the basis of this charitable project. Grade 5-11 students not only learned how to make candles with their own hands, but also understood the importance of teamwork, discovered mutual aid as a basis for cooperation, and did a small, but very useful thing.

The project was conducted in two stages: a master class in the Coordination Headquarters area itself, where the children were told about the manufacturing technique and introduced to volunteer work.

During the second stage at the Lyceum itself, students made candles, which were delivered to the front line.

Dnipro Lyceum looked for different techniques for creating these candles. Some of them are aimed to maximize the burn time of the candle, and some are aimed to increase the amount of heat. Moreover, children studied the results of mixing wax or paraffin with vegetable oil. Our research aimed to find out the efficiency of using oil and the optimal proportion of the mixture of paraffin and oil to increase the amount of heat. Thus, the improvement of the technology of making trench candles will contribute to the achievement of the global goals of sustainable development, defined by the UN in 2015, in particular, Goal 2 overcoming hunger, and Goal 11 the sustainable development of cities and communities.
