Future Lawyer: Aequo Summer School — from Identifying Real Students’ Needs to Creating a New Internship Format

Project description:

Challenge: Ukrainian legal education remains largely theoretical, while the market expects students to be practically prepared. The war has deepened this gap as thousands of young people have gone abroad, universities have lost resources, and internships often target only senior students. Ukraine risks losing an entire generation of future lawyers at a time when they are most needed for the country’s rebuilding.

Solution: Aequo initiated a nationwide study together with LegalTalents.Report to identify the gap between education and practice, later presenting the findings at a roundtable co-organized with the Ukrainian Bar Association. In parallel, Aequo launched Future Lawyer: Aequo Summer School — a program for 2nd–3rd year students that opens the path to the profession through mentorship, guidance, and skills development.

Result: Aequo’s initiative became a catalyst for change in how young lawyers are trained. The Ukrainian Bar Association took on the mission of developing shared internship standards. The first Aequo Summer School brought together 60 participants from 16 universities, marking a first step toward systemic transformation in legal education. The project stands as a benchmark of an ESG approach that strengthens the profession and supports Ukraine’s rebuilding.
