First steel underground hospital

Project description:

Challenge: Since the full-scale invasion, Metinvest has been steadfast in its support for Ukraine’s defence forces through Rinat Akhmetov’s Steel Front initiative. On the battlefield, every second counts. Yet wounded defenders often face lengthy evacuation to distant hospitals – a delay that can cost lives. To address this, it is vital to equip frontline medics with safe working conditions and the essential tools required to deliver immediate medical care to military personnel and save their lives.

Solution: In coordination with the Medical Forces East, Metinvest has established Ukraine’s first underground medical stabilisation centre near the front line. Located six metres below ground, the steel hospital is equipped with secure communications, electronic warfare systems, alternative power sources, and safety measures. Inside, it features a laboratory, surgical equipment, oxygen concentrators, a ventilator, defibrillators, and more. The facility meets NATO standards for Role/Echelon 2 field hospitals, ensuring a high level of readiness and care in frontline conditions.

Result: The hospital delivers resuscitation and treatment until patients are either discharged or transferred to another medical facility. It is equipped with two operating theatres, allowing frontline medics to perform a wide range of emergency surgical procedures simultaneously – without the need to transport the wounded to distant hospitals, thereby saving critical time. The hospital accommodates up to 100 individuals per day, providing a safe environment for both medical personnel and patients, and playing a vital role in saving the lives of Ukraine’s defenders.
