DTEK Tylihulska WPP – the first wind farm in the world constructed amid war

Project description:
During the Russian shelling of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, DTEK Renewables built the first stage of DTEK Tylihulska WPP with a capacity of 114 MW. It will provide electricity to 200,000 households and reduce CO2 emissions by the equivalent of 400 thousand tons annually.
Construction began before the full-scale invasion. This wind farm was supposed to be the largest in Ukraine with a design capacity of 500 MW. Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine put the construction on hold. After the first successes of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and a comprehensive risk assessment, the company resumed construction of the wind farm. It installed 19 wind turbines in the shortest possible time, less than 100 km from the front line in the Mykolaiv region. Together with Vestas, it developed safety protocols and evacuation routes, installed shelters, purchased bulletproof vests and helmets, equipped a medical center and an ambulance, and stockpiled food and water.
The main construction work took place during the heaviest shelling of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, blackouts, fuel crisis and winter. During this period, there were 296 air raids. This project was implemented under harsh conditions, but DTEK Renewables had a big goal: to generate additional electricity for Ukrainians who suffered from blackouts.
The company strives to become a leader in reducing the effects of climate change and contribute to the achievement of the goals of the Energy Strategy of Ukraine to increase electricity production from renewable sources to 30 TWh by 2030.
