Cultivating Freedom

Project description:
Due to a large number areas of Ukraine which have been mined or are contaminated with explosive materials, FMC decided to create a program aimed at:
• Restoring farmers’ fields to productive use – allowing planting and harvesting that is free from the hidden deadly dangers of mines and unexploded ordnance.
• Contributing to improving food security – Ukraine is one of the major global exporters of several staple crops, such as corn, wheat, sunflower (oil), rapeseed, and barley. The country’s ability to safely plant and harvest key crops directly impacts food security not only for Ukrainians but also for millions of people around the world, especially in low- & middle-income countries.
The Cultivating Freedom program therefore covers several aspects of FMC’s commitments to Ukraine:
• The company concluded a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) with the Ukrainian government, based on 4 pillars:
Food security; Innovation; Farmers’ safety; Knowledge transfer and capacity building
• It is committing 3% of its sales to de-mining agricultural lands, to increase farmer safety and allow them to go back to producing the food that Ukrainians and millions around the world depend on to achieve food security (through funding The HALO Trust). The HALO Trust is a leading demining organization, with nearly 40 years of experience in many conflict areas around the world, and has been present in Ukraine since 2015. FMC funding supports investments in de-mining teams, demining equipment and education.
• FMC is currently assessing long-term plans to invest in manufacturing capacities in
Ukraine.
