Batteries, Get into the Car Quickly! The Energy of Responsibility

Batteries, Get into the Car Quickly! The Energy of Responsibility

Project description:

Challenge: The battery collection movement in Ukraine faces funding challenges: Ukrainians are so active that they turn in more batteries than the movement can raise funds to process. Battery collection and recycling are unprofitable, which is why in the EU, governments require battery importers to subsidize facilities, while municipalities assist with collection. Ukraine currently lacks such a legal framework, so over 90% of used batteries are still being disposed of in landfills, polluting the soil.

Solution: PROFPEREROBKA, LLC, as a municipal waste transporter in Kyiv, invested funds in purchasing an eco-mobile in partnership with “Batareiky Zdaytesya!”. This unusual vehicle helps draw Kyiv residents’ attention to the importance of properly disposing of batteries. Additionally, it reduces the financial burden on battery logistics from existing collection points – from stores, schools, offices, and residential buildings. The company collects batteries on the right bank of Kyiv at its own expense, which helps save budget funds for recycling.

Result: Kyiv has become the first million-plus city in Ukraine to implement the European model: the municipal carrier handles transportation, while retail and importers pay for guaranteed processing. In the first 7 months since the project launch, the Eco-mobile transported 14.5 tons of batteries from collection points to the contractor’s warehouse, completing 116 pickups. The funds saved on transportation, covered by Profpererobka, will allow for the additional processing of approximately 1 ton of batteries.
