Art therapy for Ukrainian children

Art therapy for Ukrainian children

«‎‎Winner in the category People»

Project description:

Many Ukrainian children and young people are traumatized by their experiences of war, which can have a long-term negative impact on their entire environment. To counteract this, Porsche AG supports the non-profit organization Arthelps in providing psychological care for those affected by war via art therapy. With the help of art, children can express their feelings and experiences in a different way and communicate them to others. As a result, the partner organization SAVE UKRAINE has involved many children and families from eastern Ukraine in this project. The therapeutic sessions take place in the so-called “Hope Houses”, located in the immediate vicinity to shelters where the staff and project participants can quickly escape to in the event of an air raid alert.

Since December 2022, the project has been running in Kyiv, in cooperation with Arthelps and the SAVE UKRAINE teams. Moreover, regular creative workshops were established, during which children and youngsters can discover, enhance and develop their talents as well as boost their self-confidence in the long run.

Since the project launch, more than 1.100 therapeutic group sessions have been held for children, young people, and women (especially mothers and widows) to speak out about traumatic stress, symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, and find ways of how to deal with them. Within the group work, mechanisms for self-regulation are taught and a sense of security is established. In addition to the group sessions, around 1.200 individual therapies were also conducted so that particularly traumatized participants could receive additional psychological support.
