Air Quality Map LUN City Air (ЛУН Місто Air)

Period of implementation of the project:
2019-2020
Challenge:
Draw particular attention of the public and the authorities to the problem of air quality in cities, especially in the largest Ukrainian metropolis Kyiv.
Raise awareness of Ukrainians, Kyiv citizens of this topic.
Provide Ukrainian society with access to up-to-date and reliable information regarding air quality.
And thus promote:
- reducing emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere.
- reducing the number of deaths and illnesses from exposure to polluted air.
- transition to rational models of consumption and production.
Solution:
Our team has created a map of air quality LUN City Air.
Data on the map enter in real-time from stations, which are also made by the project team.
The creation of the map and the development of the stations took a year and a half, the launch took place in September 2020.
Currently, more than 50 LUN City Air stations are located in Kyiv and Kyiv region and are sending data to the map every second.
Stations measure the concentration of fine dust – PM 1, PM 2,5, PM 10.
Among the main sources of these particles are vehicles, industry, fires. The smallest particles PM 1, PM 2,5, PM 10 can enter the blood through the alveoli, blood vessels and contribute to cardiovascular disease, negatively affect the lungs and brain, complicate the course of COVID-19.
All LUN City Air stations are calibrated with each other and with a measurer that is entered in the Register of approved types of measuring equipment in Ukraine.
Usage of the map is free and accessible to all.
To make access to air quality data even easier, we are also working on creating a bot that will send data on request.
We are actively working in the media field to draw the attention of the public and the authorities on this topic.
Results:
The project was launched in September 2020. But we already (september) have the first results in drawing special attention to air quality.
Our team has already conducted more than 10 studies on air quality and its impact on health.
The LUN City Air map has received more than 30,000 views by citizens.
Owing to coordination with the media (more than 50 news portals and TV channels made news and stories about our initiative) we were able to actualize the topic of air quality to the general public.
Participation in the conferences has raised the issue of air quality in the field of development and open data.
We have also started a dialogue with representatives of the Department of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Kyiv City State Administration.
